Fire Station Fieldtrip

October 15-19  Fire Station
This week was VERY exciting!  To jump start it, we began being brave independent writers.  With guidance, each student chose a story idea and focused on writing some sounds they heard in the words of their sentence.  We talked a lot about how the picture should have enough detail and labeling to tell the story.  We also worked on meeting our coloring goal of using the same number of colors as the number of years old you are.  Good thing I'm not finishing all of my pictures because there would be a LOT of colors!! :)

Some stories we read were:  "The Colors of Fall" -- "The Scarecrow's Hat" -- "What is a Scientist?" -- "Edward the Emu" -- "What Do You Like?"
In science, we began our Rainbows/Color/Light unit.  We experimented making rainbows with prisms, flash lights and black and white paper.  We played with the angles of the prism to get the brightest colors.... so fun!  We recorded our observations in our new science journals.  Next week we will observe what light does to our eyes, and we will experiment different ways of mixing colors.
In math, we continue to work on correct number formation, reading two-digit numbers, the tricky teens and reading the calendar.  We have played some fun dice games.  We also learned how to log into the Everyday Math website with our own user names and passwords to play the games that reinforce our lessons.  On the mimio, we played Monster Squeese and sorted colors and shapes.  Anything technology is always a hit!
We ended our week with our field trip to the fire station.  Thank you so much to Firemen Scott, Reggie, Bill and Kert for welcoming us to your work place, teaching us about fire safety, and taking the time to show us the big engines... and of course to Fireman Scott for letting us "pound" on him when he was all geared up!  We hope you enjoy our pictures of our fun time there.
Next week we will be talking pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins, and we will be getting ready for Open House on Thursday night.  Hope you all can stop by and see our cozy room... our little home away from home.  Thanks for sharing your child with me.
