Earth Day, Dirt & Happy 50th Birthday OMS!

Ryan & Kaleigh dressing up for the decades!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY OMS:  Last week Olive-Mary Stitt celebrated our 50th Birthday!  The week was very fun-filled..... We dressed up for the different decades, participated in a school-wide lip dub to the song "When Can I See You Again" by Owl City, took a school Rainbow picture (Kindergarten wore purple!), enjoyed a spirit-filled assembly and open house, and wrote our kindergarten favorites for the OMS Time Capsule.  Stop into the front office to see the whole-school rainbow picture.  The PTA will be selling the picture at cost... details to follow.

DIRT:  We defined the "properties" of dirt and compared how it is made with how sand is made.  (See last week's blog for Jonathan's great definition of "properties".)  Some of the kids were not thrilled about getting dirty!  Go figure???  We added water to our dirt and "shook it up" to some music to make "dirt pop", and then we let it settle overnight to see what happened.  We observed the heavier stuff, like bark, that floated to the top.  We learned that dirt needs humus because it is like vitamins for the dirt.  (It's not to be confused with the hummus we eat, although we learned both are healthy!)  We've been calling it SOIL now, as we used it to plant grass in individual pots we each painted.  We'll be watching our grass grow now as we celebrate EARTH DAY all week!
